Clutter. It’s the thing buyer’s can’t see past. Clutter distracts potential buyers from seeing themselves in your home. Decluttering your home is an important step to getting it ready to list.
Your collection of rare books and magazines, ceramics or figurines, and even important memorabilia–while priceless to you–is only going to look like clutter to a potential buyer. As you get ready to list your home, you’ll want to think of clutter as anything unnecessary that can visually crowd the space. Even too much furniture is going to make rooms look crowded and small. If decluttering stresses you out, remember that you don’t actually have to get rid of anything–just make a plan to store these items until your home is sold.
Tackle decluttering by using our list to streamline the process:
- Work from a plan: Write down every room in the house, including the garage and basement, and list big items of “clutter” in each room that can be removed.
- Then go room by room for the smaller stuff: Start with the smallest project first–maybe streamlining the contents of a bookcase, shelf by shelf–and don’t move on to the next until you have completed the first.
- Declutter your yard. Remove toys, tools, garden ornaments, etc. Think neat, organized, and clean.
- Box up: Make three piles–Donate, Discard, Store–and use clear plastic bins for the items you plan to store for easy access, or color code and label each by room or season.
